“Boooooyy!”

Phantasm: A Review

So, I’ve recently picked up a DVD copy of Phantasm, a film by Don Coscarelli, and i must say, my expectations were pretty high. Finally, I have the film with the Tall Man and those funny silver drilling orbs in my collection!

The DVD is nothing overly special: As you put it in, you are subjected to six trailers (Kenny and Co, Some Mountain Movie with Lance Henriksen, Night of the Living Dorks, Re-Animator, Phantasm 3, and Masters of Horror). The main menu is cool looking but ever so redundant. Cut-scenes between pushing “Play” or “Special Features” are soooo long, it becomes annoying.

The Special Features are great. Not much to say here. You get a documentary called “Phantasmagoria” which is pretty neat.

And now…THE FILM!

The film itself is nothing special. There I said it. The script is ok and the plot is filed with too much stuff (not to mention the “Fear is the mindkiller” line. Did someone just say DUNE!?). A film like this is best enjoyed simple. There are some great characters (Tall Man) and moments (the orbs) that are spread throughout the picture that kept me going. I really love the way the film was shot. Coscarelli is no Argento, but he definately has something going on here.

So, to some up my review. The film is not that special but was enjoyable. I can only give the film a 3/5 because it’s pretty to look at and not much else.
